Sampradaya - 2017 - Competition Guidelines

  1. Teachers of Carnatic music are requested to nominate their students in each of the categories shown below.

 
  1. Vocal, instrumental and percussion presentations are welcome (Carnatic Classical genre). It is the students’ responsibility to bring all instruments they may need.

 
  1. A registration fee of $25 per category needs to be paid by visiting www.ragact.org and clicking on the goddess Saraswati icon. Please note that no other form of payment can be processed by RAGA.

 
  1. Teachers should use the Sampradaya 2017 - Registration Form to nominate their student(s) no later than Wednesday, March 15, 2017. No other forms of submissions will be accepted. Please note that separate registration is required for each category.

 
  1. The competing students in all categories will perform before judges on Saturday, April 01, 2017 at 10:00 AM (Subsequent communication on the schedule will be sent to the nominating teachers).

 
  1. Winners will be awarded trophies and merit certificates presented by RAGA. All participants will be encouraged with participation certificates and medals for performing on stage for the event.

 
  1. Judges’ decisions are final and binding

 
  1. The Sampradaya competition events are free for anyone to attend.

 

  1. Age limits are only a guideline for students’ registration and they are not strictly enforced. Teachers are free to nominate students in any category based on the student's ability.

Category (1) Vocal / Category (2) Instrumental

  


 

 

  1. Vocal and Instrumental - Geetham and Svarajati: recommended age group 611

 
  1. All applicants must submit two Gitams and one Svarajati in the application form noting the raga, tala, composer and the first few words of the item.

 
  1. The judges will choose the items and request the participant to perform one gitam and one svarajati on stage.

 

  1. A time limit of five (5) minutes will be imposed.


     

  1. Vocal and Instrumental - Varnam: recommended age group 1215

 
  1. Applicants must submit three Varnams in the application form noting the raga, tala, composer and the first few words from the Pallavi.

 
  1. The judges will choose which of the Varnams must be performed on stage. They may also ask you to sing just a section from the Varnam list that given by the participant.

 

  1. A time limit of seven (7) minutes will be imposed.


     

  1. Vocal and Instrumental - Kriti: recommended age group 1215

 
  1. Applicants must submit three Kritis in the application form noting the raga, tala, composer and the first few words from the Pallavi.

 
  1. The judges will choose which of the Kritis must be performed on stage. They may also ask you to sing just a section from the Kritis list that given by the participant.

 

  1. A time limit of seven (7) minutes will be imposed.


     

  1. Vocal and Instrumental - Kriti, Manodharmam: recommended age group 1318

 
  1. All applicants must submit three (3) Kritis on the application form noting the raga, tala, composer and Sahitya or words where the Niraval and Svarakalpana to be performed.

 

  1. A time limit of ten (10) minutes will be imposed.


     

  1. Vocal and Instrumental - Ragam, Tanam and Pallavi: recommended age group 15 – 20

 
  1. All applicants must submit their choice stating the pallavi title, raga and tala on the application form.

 
  1. Pallavis should be rendered in at least two kalais and with trikalam.

 

  1. A time limit of ten (10) minutes will be imposed.


     

Category (3) - Percussion


 


There are three age groups in percussion category of Mridangam, Konnakkol, Kanjira, Ghatam, etc.

 

1) Percussion: Beginner - Recommended age group 6 – 11

Participants should be able to play in Adi tala and Rupaka tala

 

2) Percussion: Intermediate - Recommended age group 12 – 15

Participants should be able to play in Adi tala, Rupaka tala and Misra Chapu

 

3) Percussion: Advanced - Recommended age group 13 – 18

Participants should be able to play in Adi tala, Rupaka tala, Misra Chapu and Khanda Chapu
 

A time limit of five (5) minutes will be imposed for beginner and intermediate categories and for the advanced category a time limit of ten (10) minutes will be imposed.


 

Winners

Winners in 4 and 5 in Vocal categories, Instrumental category 5 and 3 in Percussion category will be offered an opportunity to perform for 30 minutes in a mini concert before one of the Raga concerts.

The winners may choose to have their own accompanists and RAGA may encourage winners to coordinate with other Sampradaya competition winners to consider performing
